>Some insight into why WPC was good for Sinometrics

In Localization, Sinometrics, Translation Services on August 15, 2007 by mstevensrev

>Donald A. DePalma writes a piece outlining some of the problems that we have in the localization industry with our trade shows in Common Sense Advisory. Too many, none distinguishing themselves, and same ol’ speakers. I’ll be interested in what positive suggestions they add to the conversation.

For me I’m in sales so I’m looking to learn, but my main priority is to find the next lead. So my hope is that we find a way in the industry to improve our story and find more people who want to hear it. We are getting geared up for Localization World, my first so I have some excitement, but honestly we would not be there if it were not in our home town of Seattle, WA.

>Word of the Day; eclectic

In Fun, Word of day on August 15, 2007 by mstevensrev

>Being married to an artist I always thought that this word had artistic leanings, but after reading about it, it doesn’t have to. It means from different sources. Selecting the best of all that is around you and using it. Karin and I have always had an eclectic leading toward our decoration of our house and our over all world view. Some of that is out of necessity. When you are doing community development work you have to decorate with what you have. We are eclectic people, which makes us very difficult to figure out.

>Psalm 99

In Psalms, Theology on August 15, 2007 by mstevensrev

>

99:1 The Lord reigns; let the peoples tremble!
He sits enthroned upon the cherubim; let the earth quake!
2 The Lord is great in Zion;
he is exalted over all the peoples.
3 Let them praise your great and awesome name!
Holy is he!
4 The King in his might loves justice.
You have established equity;
you have executed justice
and righteousness in Jacob.
5 Exalt the Lord our God;
worship at his footstool!
Holy is he!

6 Moses and Aaron were among his priests,
Samuel also was among those who called upon his name.
They called to the Lord, and he answered them.
7 In the pillar of the cloud he spoke to them;
they kept his testimonies
and the statute that he gave them.

8 O Lord our God, you answered them;
you were a forgiving God to them,
but an avenger of their wrongdoings.
9 Exalt the Lord our God,
and worship at his holy mountain;
for the Lord our God is holy!

Perhaps it is because it is in poetry, but the fear of God this Psalm is talking about seems more ritualistic or a part of a drama, rather than a moment where the Psalmist is actually scared. Again we come back to the royal image of God, people should fear/respect the king for his has great power, and this is the image coming across to me.

Moses and Aaron, were among the priest. Now there would be some discussion regarding Moses, but again poetry therefore the point is to remember the story and know that he functioned as a priest. Samuel the prophet called upon God. The listed to God and God was faithful to them. Remember the story.

Gos answered them, he forgave them when they messed up, he took their side against those who were doing them wrong. Remember that, he can do the same for you and me. There is nothing more comforting to know that someone is on my side, I can risk, be bold, and live as free.

>Transparency for Service Providers

In Localization, Sinometrics, Translation Services on August 14, 2007 by mstevensrev

>Just came across an interesting article directed at companies like Sinometrics. 6 things your localization agency doesn’t want you to know. It seems that Cat’s company has been able to find great translators directly that have satisfied their need. This is the case for many companies, and who can blame them. As much as I would like to sell them my services, they have to do what is best for their bottom line.

So it leads me to questions like, “What is the proper place of service companies?” Often I must deal with companies who are in Cat’s position or at least exploring the option. What I find is that they want to concentrate on the core strengths of their business rather than spending energy finding people to handle localization projects for them. Why is it that many people use dry cleaners? Some prefer the way a dry cleaned shirt looks. For them it is an issue of quality. Others would rather spend their time on something else rather than ironing clothes. Now there are many companies that exist for this reason. When was the last time you changed the oil on you car? You might even know how, but you probably chose not to.

What I really like about Cat’s post is that she is confronting some of the myths of the industry. There are bad ways to use TM’s of clients to manipulate them into continuing to do business with you even though you are not providing excellent results. That should be exposed. Now Sinometrics handles the TM’s differently, they are owned by our clients so they can use them as they please. There are other fees involved with working with agencies because they carry overhead. Very few translators are hiring a salesteam to go out there and scurry up business. Our agency is able to work in agile programming enviroments, we are not as flexible as working direct, but pretty close.

My impression of the industry is there is a lot to learn and my hope is that the more Sinometrics is able to listen to criticism like Cat’s the better we will be able to evolve as a company.

>Psalm 98

In Evangelist, Psalms, Theology on August 14, 2007 by mstevensrev

>

98:1 Oh sing to the Lord a new song,
for he has done marvelous things!
His right hand and his holy arm
have worked salvation for him.
2 The Lord has made known his salvation;
he has revealed his righteousness in the sight of the nations.
3 He has remembered his steadfast love and faithfulness
to the house of Israel.
All the ends of the earth have seen
the salvation of our God.

4 Make a joyful noise to the Lord, all the earth;
break forth into joyous song and sing praises!
5 Sing praises to the Lord with the lyre,
with the lyre and the sound of melody!
6 With trumpets and the sound of the horn
make a joyful noise before the King, the Lord!

7 Let the sea roar, and all that fills it;
the world and those who dwell in it!
8 Let the rivers clap their hands;
let the hills sing for joy together
9 before the Lord, for he comes
to judge the earth.
He will judge the world with righteousness,
and the peoples with equity.

Most of the songs we got have need to be changed.  One of my favorite authors, Anne Lamont, says we have records playing in our heads…one says we are the greatest thing ever to exist and the other says we are worthless and it is only in those moments when those stop and we have silence that we actually know who we are.  The Psalms say sing a new song, because God is good.

We join in with the earth, creation is celebrating the return of God because what is happening to it isn’t all that great. C.S. Lewis pictured in in The Chronicles of Narnia, as forever winter but never Christmas, and upon the kings return the snow began to melt.

We join our instruments and voices with that of the hills and rivers to celebrate the return of our God the king.  He is good and will judge, rightly mind you, all people with equity.  I don’t know the full extent of what that means, and I am sad of theologians who believe they do.  Often they are merely promoting their own idea of equity and claiming it is God’s.  Sadly I know I am not equitable, I watch out for myself, those I like, and especially those I love often in ways that are not good.  So thankfully it is not me who gets to judge at the end of time, I would do a horrible job of it.  My hope is in a God who can do it, better than I could ever imagine.

>Word of the day: Grace

In Evangelist, Word of day on August 14, 2007 by mstevensrev

>

Grace is a word that my time as a pastor taught me, is used all the time but very few people get it.  Bono went for it in U2 song Grace.

Grace Lyrics

I have even written stories about it and include it as the central them of my preaching.  Check out my Teddy Bear Post.

Last night Karin and I celebrated eight years of marriage (our anniversary is actually in six days but we got someone to watch the kid).  There is no better picture of grace in my life then my marriage.  I got married at 22 years old, and was a wanker.  Karin put up with a really hard person to deal with (still am) in me, and yet she would never see it that way.  Also as clueless and young as we were we were given an amazing and wonderful daughter.  Grace is more than a second chance, it is getting much more than you deserve.  Grace is celebrating eight years of marriage and knowing that God willing it is just the beginning of my time with Karin and being excited about it.

>You love your dog more than anyone else

In Fun, summer on August 13, 2007 by mstevensrev

>My theory is that if dog owners understood this, believed it and lived it we would have more appropriate boundaries in public for people with their pets. It is a good thing, that you love you pet more than anyone else. You should; walking, feeding it, washing it, paying it’s vet bills all of those things take commitment and love is a big part of that commitment. And since you love your pet so much, don’t sacrifice the unbiased love he or she has to offer before people who don’t love you pet as much.

Not everyone wants to say hi, be rubbed up against, or play with you pet. There are some people who have been attacked by dogs and have great fear especially when they are running around a public place with lots of children, noise, and not being properly watched because you want to enjoy the BBQ with your friends. The there are also the folks who just don’t want to smell like a dog all day, so even having to push you dog away is frustrating. When I am sitting on my blanket in a conversation with a friend also I don’t want to have to worry about the food on the plate next to me being stolen as your scavenger wanders the crowd. All of these things (being bitten, smell, stolen food) might be overlooked when you love someone, but no one loves you dog as much as you do. Then there are those who just don’t like dogs, and in a public place where it is illegal to let the roam without a leash these folks should not have to deal with it.

Now this may sound like I am one of the people in the last group. I am not, I love dogs, and really enjoy them. Since I currently don’t own one I often don’t want to spend my day smelling like dog. It is easy for other dog owners to love you dog a good deal because they already smell. The decision is already made for them, the rest of us really have to commit when we want to show affection toward your pet.

Finally I know there might be some thought about children running around and causing chaos. I do have a child, and a highly active energetic one. So I get your point and I agree. I love my child more than anyone else. There are a few differences, children are people (I know for some pet owners I would have to discuss this further) and the goal of them learning is socialization so that they can relate well as adults. They need times to examine relating to the world freely in social situations, parents must be aware and guide when necessary, but there is a goal to have them function as adults, not the case for dogs. Also my kid doesn’t smell, doesn’t steal people’s food, and doesn’t shove her nose in people crotches. At the same time if my kid is causing chaos or even making someone uncomfortable she will be sitting right next to me and will not get the freedom that was offered because it was abused.
