Realizations about church

In Uncategorized on April 5, 2011 by mstevensrev Tagged: , ,

The life of my family has been deeply impacted by church planting. Karin and I met at a church plant, a church plant is what led me into ministry full time, and we are passionate about the impact that church planting has for God’s kingdom.

After yesterday and our family worshiping with a great group of folks that are starting a church plant we came to the realization that it is not for us. We have only know the front line of church planting outside of our years in seminary. In many ways it fits our passions, and we have sacrificed a great deal for the sake of this movement. So while everyone who may know us well might have come to this conclusion, it is a new one for us.

In some strange way it is a humbling realization for me. There have been so many things God has called us to walk away from in this time, so many areas in which he has left only questions. God uses that space in our lives, I believe to make himself more present, bigger, and holy. My God is small, certainly not the God of the Bible. Though even as I’m walking into what feels like a vast expanse I am struck with the question, Is God really that big?

Searching through communities of faith

In Uncategorized on March 29, 2011 by mstevensrev Tagged: , , ,

This has been a process much harder than I ever could have imagined. About two months ago I left Grace Seattle (the church Karin and I met in, were married in, supported us through seminary, and 2 of 3 girls were baptized there) and also have left the Presbyterian Church of America. Perhaps there will be posts down the road about why our journey has lead us this direction for now it is too raw and I don’t do well sharing emotional things.

So we have visited about a half dozen churches in the Seattle area. Established churches, church plants, churches that started around the same time as Grace. All of which have parts of what we are looking for but all have still left us wandering, we truly feel like refugees. The good news is there is not a lack of loving folks in these places, this is very cool and has been encouraging for Karin and I but we are still in lack.

So our journey goes on.

>CLEAR’s customer service

In Uncategorized on March 28, 2011 by mstevensrev

Last week after over a month of performance issues I decided to address CLEAR, so I called in. Technical Support could not help unless I shut down the service I pay monthly for two hours, Account Manager told me I should switch to another provider. So I went on to their Customer Support Portal and commented, starting the discussion.

This morning I got to log into my CLEAR account and they deactivated it. I had to go onto customer service chat to have them reactivate it.

“very technical”, that is classic.

>My facebook thoughts on Rob Bell

In Theology on March 19, 2011 by mstevensrev

There is actually good conversations going on about Rob Bell. Martin Bashir’s interview is almost childish; starting with can God create a rock too big to move? or at least the emotional charged equivalent which uses the tragedy in Japan in a cheap way. Martin has not taken a Philosophy 101 course, at least he apparently read Rob Bell’s book.

If you are concerned/offended or whatever by Rob Bell please go to places where he is clearly refuted by orthodox scholarship not playground antics. Rob Bell has a clear history of stepping into it theologically, this is not his first rodeo. Yet like many of the Christian leaders and contemporaries of mine I am embarrassed but more embarrassed by our lack of charity and good pointed conversation. Please move beyond watching a brother squirm at the hand of someone who cannot enter into the basics of a civil philosophical/theological conversation.

Check out Jeff’s thoughts here, pretty good…http://t.co/z9nVcdW

>and so the process begins…

In home, House, Theology on December 15, 2010 by mstevensrev

>A local Seattle artist named Charley connected with Karin and I right at the perfect time. He is currently doing the heavy lifting to transform 6036 5th Ave NW into The Nest. Along the way I will continue to document the process and hopefully others will too.

The sun was out yesterday, so the entire unit was opened up all windows and everything! Here are some of the garbage pieces on the deck.

The carpet has mostly been pulled up and someone came and got it after posting it on Craigslist. Their plan is to use it for soundproofing.

With every change to the place there seems to be a new spirit of refreshment!

Charlie wanted to make sure he had his TV over so when his son visits they have something to do! This is a beautiful and amazing work.

In addition to the work Charlie did yesterday we got the studio space cleared out so that there is not room for two artists to start working. Moorea will be moving in immediately! I’ve asked her to take some pictures for us as well. I’ll be updating with those pictures and pictures of Charley and Moorea.
