Quick thought on violence

In Uncategorized on October 11, 2012 by mstevensrev Tagged: , ,

My time is not spent in the news outside of Wait, Wait Don’t Tell me on NPR and The Daily Show.  Thomas Jefferson’s said, “Were it left to me to decide whether we should have a government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”  This is interesting because I read that he did not read the newspaper but preferred to get his news from people who did, this is a practice I have adopted in my life.

The primary reason I refrain from reading the news religiously is because of the coverage of violence.  In no way to I advocate that everyone should do this simply because who would I talk with to find out the news;)  This morning while reading through the Old Testament I realized that violence in the culture must have been a major issue of God’s people too.  There are many passages about “The Cities of Refuge”, more than I would expect.  Either murder was so prevalent over a such a long period of time in Israel’s culture that it must have looked more like Oakland, Washington D.C., or New Orleans rather than Seattle, or the violence and murder in the culture was of great concern to God’s people.  So great that there are many passages laying out how violent offenders are to be dealt with in the “Cities of Refuge”.

A quick and dirty search on the ESV website provides the passages related to the City of Refuge:

  • Numbers 35:25  (Numbers 35)

And the congregation shall rescue the manslayer from the hand of the avenger of blood, and the congregation shall restore him to his city of refuge to which he had fled, and he shall live in it until the death of the high priest who was anointed with the holy oil.

  • Numbers 35:26  (Numbers 35)

But if the manslayer shall at any time go beyond the boundaries of his city of refuge to which he fled,

  • Numbers 35:27  (Numbers 35)

and the avenger of blood finds him outside the boundaries of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood kills the manslayer, he shall not be guilty of blood.

  • Numbers 35:28  (Numbers 35)

For he must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest, but after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return to the land of his possession.

  • Numbers 35:32  (Numbers 35)

And you shall accept no ransom for him who has fled to his city of refuge, that he may return to dwell in the land before the death of the high priest.

  • Joshua 21:13  (Joshua 21)

And to the descendants of Aaron the priest they gave Hebron, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pasturelands, Libnah with its pasturelands,

  • Joshua 21:21  (Joshua 21)

To them were given Shechem, the city of refuge for the manslayer, with its pasturelands in the hill country of Ephraim, Gezer with its pasturelands,

  • Joshua 21:27  (Joshua 21)

    And to the Gershonites, one of the clans of the Levites, were given out of the half-tribe of Manasseh, Golan in Bashan with its pasturelands, the city of refuge for the manslayer, and Beeshterah with its pasturelands—two cities;

  • Joshua 21:32  (Joshua 21)

and out of the tribe of Naphtali, Kedesh in Galilee with its pasturelands, the city of refuge for the manslayer, Hammoth-dor with its pasturelands, and Kartan with its pasturelands—three cities.

  • Joshua 21:38  (Joshua 21)

and out of the tribe of Gad, Ramoth in Gilead with its pasturelands, the city of refuge for the manslayer, Mahanaim with its pasturelands,

Beautiful Things, an inspiring night with Arts After Care

In Uncategorized on August 28, 2012 by mstevensrev

Last night was a beautiful moment for Karin and I as we attended a benefit dinner put on by Curtis and Grace Romjue for their organization Arts After Care.  This is a non profit organization dedicated to helping people deal with and heal from the personal holocaust that is the sex trade industry. If you are interested in the organization or the Toolkit they have created please check out their website, http://www.artsaftercare.org/

There are two thoughtsImage going through my head today about what we experience last night and over the past few years of Curtis and Grace’s journey.  First, they are the living embodiment of their vision.  First, it began with Curtis getting a vision in college, then building a band committed to fighting human trafficking, all the while asking the question what does an artist have to offer to bring about change.  Grace clearly leads in the work with Curtis, their family is so much a part of the organization it is hard to separate the two or not expect to see their daughter Harper at events.  Also on this thought, this is not about them at all.  They have placed their gifts before God and the world and asked what would you have me do to make this a better more beautiful place.  In as much as Curtis and Grace are at the center of this amazing work, they disappear because they point to something much greater.

Second, after meeting Curtis and Grace my family was inspired and we decided that this would be the issue which we take on to see change.  At that moment I had a clear vision of what that looked like for us and I was very wrong.  Throughout their journey Curtis and Grace have connected with us as a family not only inspiring Karin and I but providing Aidyn a vision too.  In addition Karin Stevens Dance has not only collaborated artistically with the group but is consulting on getting a global leader in dance to provide insight into dance related activity for the toolkit.  I am so grateful that we can be including in supporting this organization and these people.

Meet fear…a new frenemy

In Uncategorized on August 27, 2012 by mstevensrev Tagged: , , ,

There is no fear where love exists. Rather, perfect love banishes fear, for fear involves punishment, and the person who lives in fear has not been perfected in love. 1 John 4:18

A journey began in my life about two years ago, that has led me into a more contemplative and slower pace then I have ever walked when it comes to my personal life.  I have never been a person to avoid risk from moving overseas at a young age, to driving across the country to start a  new life after college, getting married extremely quickly, and even to pursue a job in community development in Oakland after graduate school – those were just a few of the risky, adventurous decisions I made in a flash.

These decision have been amazing, but due to the rapid pace that I entered them and my immaturity I took major blows from these decisions and other similar ones.  This leads me to my growing familiarity with fear. Ken Chlouber, Colorado miner and creator of the Leadville Trail 100 mile race is quoted as saying, “Make friends with pain, and you will never be alone.”  I have known pain since a young age, it has been fear who has introduced himself to me more recently.

Perhaps fear has been there on some underlying and ignored level in my level, affecting actions/decisions in both smal and large ways but it was not something that I knew.  These days he looks me in the eyes, especially when I hope.  The good news is since he has introduced himself, he can be overcome…or as the verse in 1 John says ‘cast out’, shown the door.

Over the last few weeks I have started training for 2013 triathlon season, I am very excited and it has been going very well.  My long runs have been joyous and I even called a friend to go biking with, so I’m over coming my lone ranger attitude.  In the back of my mind I know that open water swimming is my weakest area…though bike isn’t that strong.  I can easily swim for 60-90 minutes in the pool, but open water is another story and fear camps out there.

So this past Sunday morning I connected on Meet Up with a group that swims Lake Washington.  I went, and did not make the full one mile length with them in extremely choppy water, but I did get in a solid half mile swim.  Fear was not the issue, my limited ability both physically and mentally was the issue and now I have a good bench mark for improvement.  Up until the moment I pulled off my street my going to the swim was in question, as I had a million excuses to not make it.  Underlying it all was fear.

It is a corny exercise but doing one thing a week that scares you I think is very healthy and a goal I have.  The more we get out of our comfort zones, intentionally hush the negative voices in our head, and move forward through fear in courage, the more we will cast out fear.  Not because we are achieving…but rather we are in more opportunities to recognized how loved we are.  In spite of slowing down the group when I swam with them and then not even going the full distance, afterward everyone had a kind word for me and they even turned me on to some great training tips/resources!  I left encouraged and ready to get back out there!

Inspiration of Scripture and the arts

In Uncategorized on August 15, 2012 by mstevensrev Tagged: ,

Over the past few weeks two friends have engaged me in conversation on the inspiration of Scripture which was interesting, but outside of what helped me pass ordination exams and some loose thoughts I have had recently, I did not have much to say. This morning in my reading of Exodus 38-40 I was struck with the detail that Moses described the craftsmanship of the Tabernacle. In the past I would have imagined God “telling” Moses these details, whereas today I had a different thought.

Moses the elder of Israel, he was slammed with meetings on the mountain with God and serving as judge for the disputes of the people of Israel. These two ‘jobs’ would have been enough for anyone to call it a day, and yet Moses has a detailed knowledge of the work and craft that went into the building of the Tabernacle. While Moses was not a craftsman himself perhaps he understood what he was writing, describing materials and details in a spectacular way. Perhaps Moses studied, learned, appreciated, and committed himself to a deep understanding of the art that was essential to the worship of God’s people.

The descriptions in these chapters are more detailed then my minds eye would allow. I can picture Moses actually looking at the final product and sitting alongside the craftsman to provide the description we have in Scripture, or perhaps he learned it during the process of creation. The only frame of reference I have is the work that my family did on our new house, even then my description of our kitchen leaves much to be desired regarding the details when comparent with Moses description. What would it mean for me to have an appreciation of art and craftsmanship that would inspire worship? What are the parts of my life I would have to slow down and pay attention to in order to learn? We all have our excuses for not engaging the beauty of the world around us, but today I am inspired to take a moment, ask a questions, and learn from those reflecting the beauty of God in their craftsmanship.

Waiting on the Lord

In Uncategorized on December 12, 2011 by mstevensrev

Waiting on the Lord, on conversations, insight, conclusions, and most of all ‘answers’. I do not wait on the Lord, the reasoning goes: God has given me a good mind and better than average insight so therefore I should use those to draw conclusions about the people and situations around me so that I can get busy doing God’s work. THIS IS WRONG. Thoughts and emotions bombard my mind attempting to force my hand to make a play, draw a conclusion. When over and over again I am learning that God is at work in ways that are far beyond my imagination.

This does not mean a lack of activity or action, for there is plenty that is clear to do such as love those around me, pray without ceasing, place my hand to the work that is set in front of me, and be with God. It just means in the words of David, ‘Why concern my mind with things that are too great for me.” I am small, limited and simple…enjoy it.

UPDATE: Just wanted to add this little quote which actually inspired this blog post, I read this morning related to the enemies of leadership:

Fatigue. According to the late great Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, “Fatigue…makes cowards of us all.”  It also turns us introspective/negative.  Fatigue warps our objectivity in decision making.  Avoid making a critical decision when fatigued.  Whenever a person says, “I’m really tired,” start listening and encouraging.  If you try to sell of convince a fatigued person, you will only overwhelm and alienate.

Great quote on the sanctity of business

In Uncategorized on December 10, 2011 by mstevensrev Tagged: , , ,

“Businesses, are, in reality, quasi-religious sects. When you go to work in one, you embrace A NEW FAITH. And if they are really big businesses, you progress from faith to a kind of mystique. Belief in the product, preaching the product, in the end the product becomes the focus of a transcendental experience. Through ‘the product’ one communes with the vast forces of life, nature, and history that are expressed in business.” – Thomas Merton

Encouragement to me…as a salesperson

In Uncategorized on August 29, 2011 by mstevensrev Tagged: , ,

Here is the link but I’m also including the article…just because this preaches:)

Perhaps after my day of cold calling I will have a few thoughts regarding this HBR article:
3 Traits Essential to Being a Good Salesperson
Most successful salespeople can’t tell you what it is that sets them apart. That’s because they’re likely doing what comes naturally. Here are three attributes that top salespeople share:
Modesty. Contrary to the stereotype that salespeople are pushy and arrogant, the best are actually quite modest and humble. They win sales by putting the customers first, as opposed to establishing themselves as the focal point of the sale.
Curiosity. Top salespeople have a hunger for knowledge and information. This lets them stay focused during sales calls and drives them to ask inquisitive questions.
Lack of self-consciousness. The best salespeople are comfortable fighting for their causes. They’re action-oriented and unafraid to go high up in their accounts or courageously cold call new prospects.
Today’s Management Tip was adapted from “Seven Personality Traits of Top Salespeople” by Steve W. Martin

Monday encouragement

Life can only be understood backward but it must be lived forwards. -Soren Kierkegaard

This morning we walk in ways that we do not understand, many people fool us into believing that they know exactly where they stand. They are fooling themselves. We walk in the mystery of the unknown longing for the day in which we no longer look dimly through a glass but rather see if fullness.

Just in time for a blog push

In blogging, business,Microsoft,Uncategorized on June 14, 2011 by mstevensrev

Currently my new job has lots of great things going on…and I get to have my fingers in many pies. Of course selling is at the core of what I do but my hiring was because of my marketing background as well. So I’m beginning to make a push for Averro, and going to the current website you will understand why.

Just in time for this Hugh Macleod from the gapingvoid.com reposted, The Porous Membrane: Why Corporate Blogging Works with some new thoughts:)  ALIGNMENT is what I am thinking tons about right now.   As a small company much of what is done is on the reputation and relationships of individuals.  This is good, because we have great people.  But as we all know to say in the tech world, err “it does not scale”.  So let’s bottle what we do as individuals and let the world know we care about the work we do.

Hugh also sent me on to Sarah Dopp, “Can I have a witness?” Enjoy.

Proverbs 10:27-30,

In Uncategorized on May 16, 2011 by mstevensrev

27 The fear of the Lord prolongs life,
but the years of the wicked will be short.
28 The hope of the righteous brings joy,
but the expectation of the wicked will perish.

The Psalms say, man is but a breath…momentary, light, and gone.  Waking up to the power God has over all of life is hard initially but with it can come great freedom, and a greater enjoyment of life.  I am not my own, for I cannot control even the smallest things in life, I am completely dependent upon my heavenly Father.  This is in direct contrast to how I shape and organize my life, I thirst for control.  Control of my job, my wife, my kids, even my God.  When I hit the patch of ice and I realize my lack, I fear not just the situation, but the God who is worthy of fear and who is in control…even on the ice.  Which leads to life, the wicked don’t get it.

The stress in my life I bring fully on myself.  Yesterday as I sat in church I realized God has taken care of my coming and going…which means he has set up everything in between there to.  So then I take all that he has provided and decide to worry about that which he has not yet provided, because at least that must be up to me.  There is a difference in hope for what God can do, and worry and stress on my shoulders to accomplish it myself.  So today perhaps for a short breath I am going to hope and let God give me joy.  His work is wonderful, even the heartaches in my life are the places where he reaches me.
